Work permit in Saudi Arabia

An important information which the potential job seeker to Saudi Arabia should know is that your passport will no longer be with you as soon as you land in the country. Your sponsor will be having your pasport. Obviously, you will not be able to go out of the kingdom even on an emergency without your sponsor's knowledge and most important, his approval. Even if you happen to get the passport in your hands, without an exit/re-entry visa stamped on your passport, it is impossible to go out of the country, even though you have a valid plane ticket with you! And the only way to get it stamped is with your sponsor's approval.
You will be initially given a photocopy of your passport with your sponsor's signature and seal and within 3 months, you will be given a small booklet called "Iqama" which you must carry with you all the time. The iqama is nothing but a residence permit, which contains information such as your sponsor's name, your profession, your date of birth and dates of birth of your family members. Recently, this iqama has been replaced with an electronic so-called smart card, but the booklet is still widely in use. The iqama is green in color for Muslims and in red color for non-Muslims. Make sure you do not lose it and also ensure that you carry it with you whenever you go out, because this is the most important document which is going to prove that you are a legal resident in the kingdom.
It is the responsibility of your sponsor to bear the cost of the iqama as well as its renewal. More on this and much more in future posts. Do let me know your comments, which is my inspiration to write in this blog.

You can certainly do the attestation yourself or through any agent in Hyderabad itself. All the best!

Dear Sir !!

I appreciate your blog it is a spectacular work and very useful.

I have a question related to IQAMA and the medical test.
What will happen if one fails in the medical tests, let say he will end up with a ANTI - HCV positive result will this disqualify him for IQAMA ?

Expatguru said...

Anonymous,

Thanks for your comments. If a person fails in the medical test, iqama will certainly not be given. The only option is to get himself cured, give another medical test and pass the same.

dear sir

I came to saudi 2 weeks ago and my husband has to get my iqama..but I failed in the medical tests coz of HCV positive result ㅠ_ㅠ even though Im not a worker and just stay home cant I get an iqama? and if they reject should I leave alone? coz my husband's contract is till june..
thanks..

Expatguru said...

Hasna,

Chances are very high that your iqama will not be processed, but it all depends on what the doctor has written in your report. I would strongly advise you to get yourself completely treated back home. You can always re-apply on a fresh visa and join your husband. Good luck!

Hello,

I need this question answered right away!

My employer insists that he needs to keep my passport. However, I have not found any law in KSA that states an expat cannot carry their original passport and a copy of their iqama that has been notarized by the company.

Am I correct? Please advise--- an email to richard4410@juno.com

Expatguru said...

Richard,

You are absolutely right. Nowhere does any clause in the Labor Law say that the passport must be with the employer. I guess this is one of those archaic rules which you can never find, but is universally implemented!

However, it is not true that an expat cannot carry his original passport with a copy of his iqama endorsed. Normally, this is done when an expat wants to go out of the kingdom on weekends or during vacations. I also know some western expats, who have their passports with themselves and also their original iqamas (not just copies). It was given to them as a special case immediately after the Al Khobar blasts a few years back. So, there is no such thing as a regulation, it all depends on your employer. Amazing isn't it, but this is how the system is.

I have a job offer in Saudi for a 1 year contract. I am American but I finished my education in Russia and my degree is from Russia 20 years ago when it was still the Soviet Union as an exchange student and now the Russian Institute is gone. I can easily have my Russian Document translated and certified. Is this a problem to get my work permit? I will be applying for the Visa in Washington DC.

Expatguru said...

Anonymous,

As long as your degree has nothng to do with Israel, there should be no problem.

I am American executuve with 25 year experience in my industry and I must apply for a work visa and I do not have a collage degree. Is it possable to get a work visa with out a collage degree?

Expatguru said...

Anonymous,

It depends on the type of visa issued by your sponsor, i.e., the job title mentioned in your visa. Not all work visas need university degrees.

Anonymous said...

Hi,

I got a job in Riyadh and I am currently waiting for the visa. The visa agent told me that my "orginal degree" need to be attested from my university, which will then be attested from secratriate in Mumbai, Ministry of External Affairs and finally by Saudi embassy. Isn't it right that a copy of the degree / certificate is attested and not the orginal one? Does it hppen that every engineer or CA or doctor who moves to saudi has to get his original degree certificate stamped / attested from various organisations?

Expatguru said...

Absolutely. Every single degree certificate is spoilt due to these attestations. My original certificate was laminated to protect it, as it was a life-time document. The lamination was torn in one corner, the certificate bent in that corner, stapled and a rubber stamp was put, half of it appearing on each side. What more can you expect?

Anonymous said...

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your response above. So is there no way that you can save your original certificates from gettng spoiled? Will the fact help that degree has been awarded by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), which a reputed and well known university in India?

Expatguru said...

Anonymous,

They care a damn for your certificate, wherever it is from, reputed or disreputed.

Expatguru said...

If your sponsor has both your iqama as well as passport, for sure he will be able to stamp your exit. There is nothing you can do about it other than requesting him. But you cannot force him.

Dear Expatguru,

Let me appreciate your time for responding all users query, I have gone through almost all your answer. Now I am a retrun software manager from dubai who getting an offer from Saudi, My certificate is already HRD,MEA & UAE attested for Dubai visa, Now for Saudi I beleve only Saudi Embassy need to stamp, When I approaced the agent yesterday, he confirmed now the new rule in place which take atleast 30 days to do it , and it has to be done in Delhi only. Could you please advise this ASAP
Thanks

Expatguru said...

If you go personally, the attestation takes only a day. Through an agent, it should not take more than 2 to 3 days. It is high time you changed your agent.

Anonymous said...

Dear Expatguru,
Thanks for your prompt response, However I have spoken to one of the agent he said there is an new department called "Culture" created by Saudi embassy , thus all the certificates have to be validated through them irrespective of HRD/MEA, thus it takes at least 30days before it actually go to Saudi embassay for stamping. Do you have any idea about this department/agency "Culture", is this information is true? Please update

Expatguru said...

This is the first time that I am hearing about it. I have strong doubts that the agent may be trying to fool you.

Anonymous said...

hope you are now aware about the new process of Saudi Attache, they now take the copy of the certificates along with DD(for Verification charge leveid by University) from the candidate and directly send it for verification , upon receipt the endorse the certificate copy, then only the Original Certificate can be stamped by Saudi Embassy, Request you to communicate the new rules to all viewers/
Thanks

Contact your embassy immediately, now that you have got the passport. Apply for an emergency exit visa which your embassy will provide and you can fly back home. This is the only way to escape from your sponsor. Good luck!

Hi

I am getting an offer to Join one of the leading bank in Saudi as Manager IT, and the bank is asking me to stamp my degree to get the visa on passport,
Now my issue is that I do not have my degree certificate as I have only completed degree not passed. Is there any way I could avoid this degree attestation?

Expatguru said...

Anonymous,

Get a provisional certificate from your university. This would suffice for attestation purposes.

I just would like to ask how long it takes to receive a work visa from saudi. I have just been accepted as a graphics designer from a company in Riyadh. I am already finished with medical exam and the agency told me to wait for 2 to 3 weeks. Its already the 4th week and the agency keeps telling me that it hasnt arrived yet.

Please advice.

thank you.

Rey,

Congrats. You just got the first taste of how things work in the kingdom. Patience is something you will be forced to develop here. It is quite normal for a visa to take even 6 weeks, so you have to wait. There is nothing much one can do about it.

Hello

One of my friend got selected in one Saudi co.as as executive Secretary. After selection the man who has taken his interview told him to submit his passport zerox copy and other educational certificates to process the visa. But even after 2 months my friend has not received any visa.normally all the companies first take sign on offer letter and after that proceed papers for visa.( He has not gone trough the medical tests also) but the agent told my friend that he will receive the visa along with offer letter so he has to wait. Please guide me is it possible to get visa without medical test and without offer letter? We are in confusion, even after 2 months employer is not sending any papers to him nor a agent is contacting him . Agent is one of the well known and famous manpower consultants. Please guide me

Expatguru said...

Anagha,

It is impossible to get a visa without a medical test done. If original certificates have been given to the agent, you are in quite a bit of a soup. Try pressurizing the agent in giving the originals back.

Your query can be answered only by a qualified eye doctor and not by me. Note that medical tests have to be carried out by a GCC-empaneled doctor who is recognized by the Saudi embassy in your home country.

I'm in the final process of applying for my employment visa from Canada. The only document I'm missing is the medical report. Specifically, my doctor is still waiting for the Malaria test result. All the other tests are in and everything is fine.

I was informed by the lab today that the result for the Malaria test will take much longer than expected. It could take another month (or two).

According to the agency I'm dealing with for the visa application, the embassy would most likely grant me the visa without the malaria test result because the most important tests for them are the HIV/AIDS and hepatitis ones.

My worry is the following. In the scenario where I am granted the visa and go to Saudi where I would be asked to do another battery of medical tests in order to get my Iqama and get negative results with regards to the Malaria test, would I be asked to leave the country? Is the malaria test even require to get the Iqama?

Thanks for any help!

I just want to ask about processing working visa for Dammam, Saudi Arabia. I was hired as an Industrial engineer for a Concrete Block manufacturing company in Dammam through an agent (manpower agency in the Philippines). But the problem is right after they said that i was chosen by the company representative for the said position, the agent used a different job order (car mechanic)to get a saudi working visa for me. Question, is it ok to used another job description to have or to be granted with working visa? what are possible consequence if i will be granted with working visa using different job description but in reality my job is industrial engineer? Is this legal?

I really enjoy the blogs! I am currently looking at a couple of different employment prospects in KSA as a Paramedic. I know that at some point they will request notarized/certified diplomas, transcripts, certification of employment. My question is, I am wanting to get the ball rolling and send out requests for certificate of employment from my previous and current employer, would I need to personalize the request according to the Saudi employer, or would a "generic" from the employer be sufficient? Would I need to make "Certified" copies, for each potential employer, or just send a regular copy with notary and seal, until I get in country and show to employer? I am not really sure of the process. I have looked on what I think is the Saudi Embassy website, I get errors from the appropriate link.

Thanks!

The passport and the original docs are with the agent. Now she is selected by another hospital and is offered a much better package. Is there any problems if she go for the second by cancelling the first? How long will it take for her to get the individual visa if we continue with first offer?

Salam Alaikum

I am currently working at a University in Riyadh and am very concerned about my visa. My visa (a visitor's visa!) expired in December and I have since been given this stamp to 'extend' my stay in the Kingdom. I am not the only one, as many of the teachers in the group working for the same company have the same 'extension' stamp. There are huge problems now as there are almost 20 women who went overseas during our break and they are not allowed back into the Kingdom, some were even held in the detention cells at the airport.

How can we ensure that company sorts out or visas and make us 'legal'? Some of the women are on iqamas, but it's only a select few. We don't want to rock the boat too much and be deported!!! However we want to be able to exit and enter the Kingdom without having to worry about being held up in the airports or deported.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Expatguru said...

Steph,

Immediately contact your embassy for a quick exit from the country. Note that for every single day you stay after your visit visa expiry, there is a fine of SR1000 and after 15 days you are liable to be imprisoned for illegally staying. Unless there is a specific visa sticker in your passport showing clearly the new expiry date, something is seriously wrong. No point in waiting any further. Talk to your embassy right away and be ready to pack your bags at short notice. Your embassy will arrange an emergency exit for you. Good luck!

How you will feel if you come to USA or Europe and someone take your passport and rule you what you can do and you are not free to leave the country? Is this written in Kuran? No Way. Respect people and help them not doing this to any one.

So sorry without any misunderstandings but this is not good. And kuran never allow such law in world not only in KSA. Buuuuuuuuu

Recently, i got an IT job in KSA but my employer claims he can only get me business visit visa and not iqama because my degree isn't in computing. Is this correct, what options do i have. Kindly advise.

Our company is based and licensed in Dubai with a professional management consultancy trade license. We have been approached by a large Saudi bank for a short term contract (1/2 months) relating to internal audit and risk management consultancy services to be rendered to them. Do we need to be licensed in Saudi to perform this service?

Good day sir, I am a Filipino Engineer and been working for almost 7 years in my company in Jeddah K.S.A., unportunately during my last vacation this october 4 2012, I got very sick and my re-entry visa got expired last Dec 3, 2012. Though upon cheking my visa, I need to exit Saudi on or before Dec. 30, 2012. Since I exit Oct.4 and I was only given 60 days it expired on Dec 3. Now I am just waiting via Courier the Documents needed which already been sent by my employer for an extension of my re-entry visa, Is there a chance I will be granted an extension before Dec. 30 2012? or Am I not late in filling an extension request since the documents are still on there way here in the Philippines, though the request for extension in Jeddah K.S.A. were filed before Dec 3 or the expiry of my re-entry visa. Thanks and more power. I hope you can advise me the soonest.

Sir,

I am a Canadian citizen. I am currently living in Jeddah with a spouse visa and became a non-resident of Canada. Recently, I have got a job in a University in Jeddah and I need to apply for the work visa to work in Saudi Arabia. My employer said that I need to send the documents to Saudi embassy in Canada. My question is - is it possible to process the visa without going to Canada (can I do the medical examination in Saudi Arabia)?

Sir,
I am from Uttar pradesh,India.I got the offer letter from the employer in Saudi Arabia through a Indian recruitment agency, recruitment agent told me to give 1 lac rupees for his consultancy fees, but i read in ministry of overseas department website that , job seekers are sellers and employers are buyers. In most cases, commission to the broker is paid by the buyer; with recruitment agencies and hiring there is no exception,i hv no any idea what can i do?i think he is doing fraud with me bt he is given all details of employer so, please help me..

Expatguru said...

Mohd.Rashid,

If you have 1 lac rupees, you are better off in India. Believe me, life is extremely tough in Saudi Arabia. It is more and more apparent that it is fit only for Hajj and Umrah, not for work. People here do not have an easy life and there is a struggle for everything. If you take my advice, just invest that money in some small business, even a tea shop, and you will be better off in your home country rather than leading a dog's life abroad.

Hello,
Thank you for hosting this blog topic.
I have a few questions regarding
obtaining a whatever proper visa
will work and give my husband the
best results for his new
employment contract.

Hubby has a new contact for a
Canadian company doing work
inside KSA; however, this new
company seems to be stumped on
coming up with a visa which will
allow hubby to work and reside
inside KSA. He has worked there off and on for years. He can
comply with all the visa
requirements and is in excellent
health per his last 4 physicals.
And his last contract was
obtained for him by a company
working in KSA and he was 63
years old. He is now 68; has
excellent reference from all who
know him and was referred to this
job by the PME, Saudi Aramco and
the heads of Jubail City. Is
here something more that either
his new company needs to be doing
or that he him self can do to
comply with all visa requirements
and obtain a visa for business or
work inside KSA and he would like
to be able to also reside there
and only leave infrequently. He
would like to know what the name
is of the visa he should be
applying for, what other
requirements need to be provided
for the visa and what can be done
to help speed up the visa
process. My husband says they
have age restrictions but KSA has
always had age restrictions and
like I said, his last visa for
residing inside KSA with Igama
and a 5 year multiple entry/exit
visa was granted at age 63. How
can he duplicate this action with
this present new company? Please
advise everything we need to do
so he can work there. He loves
it there and does an excellent
job for everyone he works for.
Thanks very much for your
kindness and reply in advance.

Sir,

I just got a job in Saudi and i was initially refused visa due to the fact that the saudi embassy said the job title given to me does not correspond to my qualification.
My sponsor re-applied again and a visa was issue. I am worried because the duration of stay on the visa says 90 days.
What happens after the 90 days. I have a permanent job here in the Uk. I can't leave my job here in the uk for the unknown.
I have tried to ask my employer if my contract will be re-newed after the one year.
I was supposed to have started in January this year but because the visa application was refused, it now took up till now to get the visa.
My fear is that i do not want to be out of job after three months. I have a wife and four children who are dependent on my.
I am yet to hear from my sponsor about the questions i asked.
My agent will be sending my passport and all my original certificate to me.
Please advise me on what to do. I am confuse and afraid to leave my permanent job here in the uk.
Is there a gurantee that i can get another job in the kingdom or anywhere else in the middle east on my own.
Thanks i await your response.

Dear Expatguru,

It is a pleasure reading your blog and find it very useful to everyone who have relative questions about Saudi. Recently, my husband had a job offer in Riyadh as General Manager/Head Chef for the whole production. I have few question which I am asking you to help and enlighten us as right now, we don't have any idea or clue of anything except for the job.

1. Currently,we are here in Dubai and waiting for him to process our work permit as he said it would be alot easier for us to come at the same time since they agreed at the very beginning that he will not accept the job if his family cannot come. If this is true, how we can bring our 3 kids along with us? Is it possible to do that or we have to arrive there first and get the kids later?

2. His company is food production. Is it possible to employ a lady under his company for office jobs? If yes, under what job title can a lady get work permit? By the way, I am a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science graduate.

3. I have been seeing in your readers that some failed their HVC or HCV medical, can I know what is that? And the medical, is it done outside Saudi or when we arrive in Saudi?

4. How long does it normally take for the employer to get a work permit or visa for an employee as after my husband's cancellation in his present job, we only have 30 days here in Dubai to stay.

i guess that's all the questions I can think of right now and I do hope you can help us out as I am on a panic mode already.

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

Best Regards,

Maria
